So what do you mean by tension exactly?

I am guessing that means turning the key slightly while performing the bump. Correct me if I'm wrong.

More or less.

If you've ever lockpicked then you know how much force to apply. Its actually somewhat light. You dont want to twist too hard, because then the pins wont push up very well, and will result in a "bad bump". You want to twist it just enough to click it over when you bump it, not any more.

Well actually that depends but more force is always not effective. With more practice you will learn the amount of force to be applied. I always start from less and slight force.
