How do u know what key a lock requires?

just by looking at a random door or lock?

If you have the original you'd know for sure ;)

I'd be willing to be that 90% of the time (in the US at least) it's going to be a Schlage or a Kwikset. As far as telling which key it is... the key way, general size, etc

It depends upon the lock and the key-way. each lock has different key-way and if key fits inside the lock then you can bump. also remember that key has to move easily inside the key-way.
